Domain portfolio audit

A quarterly domain portfolio audit process to drop waste, fix expiry risk, and reallocate renewal budget with a clear scorecard.

Last reviewed: 11 August 2026

An audit is a scheduled decision meeting with yourself (or your team). Without it, renewals become autopilot spending.

Scorecard per domain

Ask:

  1. What job does this domain do today?
  2. What happens if it disappears tomorrow?
  3. Would I buy it again at today’s renewal price?
  4. Is there a clearer owner or client of record?

If answers are weak, mark drop or transfer.

Audit agenda (90 minutes)

  1. Export / open full inventory
  2. Sort by renewal cost descending
  3. Review expiring < 90 days
  4. Review auto-renew off list
  5. Decide keep / drop / sell for the bottom cohort
  6. Update labels and notes
  7. Schedule transfers/drops at registrars

Output

  • Drop list with dates
  • Keep list with auto-renew confirmation
  • Budget impact of drops on the next 12 months

Pair with renewal cost planning.

FAQ

How often should I audit my domain portfolio?

Quarterly is enough for most portfolios; monthly if you actively trade or manage many client names.
